The steel industry is one of the key contributors to the manufacturing output of India. The availability of coal, iron ore, and cheap labor are the major factors behind the growth of the steel industry in this country. As of October 2021, India is globally ranked second in producing crude steel.1 In 2020-21, it produced 102.49 million tonnes of crude steel. In 2021-22, the production was further expected to increase by 18% and touch the 120 million tonnes benchmark.2 Keeping pace with the production, the export figure also shows an upward trend in this industry. The export of finished steel rose by 121.6% in April 2021 compared to that of April 2020. As a result, the steel and associated metallurgical industries have become a favorite investment destination for foreign investors. As per the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), these industries have attracted USD 16 billion of foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows from April 2020 to June 2021.3en_US
