Abstract: The case documents the innovation journey at an eye care hospital in India that developed a successful stem cell therapy for treating blindness. The innovative therapy had become a global benchmark securing much acclaim for the hospital. The innovation journey spanning a period of 16 years was realized by successfully overcoming severe resource constraints. Prudent action informed by values enabled early efforts. This led to emergent opportunities, and drew in research collaborators, financial contributors, and even patient support. The case enables an understanding of innovating in resource-scarce contexts, and the importance of design approach to innovation and strategy in such contexts. The teaching note draws on literatures from ‘design and innovation’, and ‘phronesis and strategy’- the two of the most recent developments in the field of strategy and management.
