Abstract: The case documents implementation of reverse mentoring initiative at Tata Steel in pursuit of digital transformation within the company. Tata Steel is a 150 year old company, and one of the largest and lowest cost steel producers globally. In the new millennium, post the acquisition of European steel maker Corus, Tata steel was facing a unique and dynamic set of challenges that necessitated the company to reinvent itself. This was coupled with the rise of digital and automation technologies in manufacturing, and Tata Steel realized that working with these technologies was essential for sustained business excellence. Tata Steel identified and launched digital reverse mentoring as a strategic initiative to develop such digital capabilities within the organization while creating a talent advantage. The case study describes this initiative, its implementation, and its outcomes.
