Data Source :- Interviews with leadership team at Mytrah Energy
Setting :- Renewable energy market in India and its challenges.
Case Reference No. :- IIMC-CRC-2015-08
Case Length :- 21 pages
The case outlines the business decision being currently faced by Ravi Kailas, founder of Mytrah Energy, one of the largest independent power producers in India’s wind power sector. The case describes Mytrah’s story from its inception to its emergence as a leader in its business. Some noteworthy points include the process employed by its founders to select the wind sector as their focus area, the initial fund raising process, the challenges faced in this effort and methods used to resolve them, and steps taken to diversify, differentiate and de-risk the business. Having set up a business of scale, Ravi now has to decide among three competing options that would define the next phase of Mytrah’s journey viz. continued growth in the wind business, related diversification within the renewable energy space or a diversification into a different domain. The case can be used as a teaching aid for discussions related to business strategy, entrepreneurship, new venture creation, fund raising (including innovative fund raising methods for new business ideas), and business in emerging markets.
