Information systems (IS) research has traditionally been concerned with the problem of how the penetration of information technology (IT) into organisations can be understood and explained. The research is an attempt to understand the factors that influence the process of penetration of IT in organisations. Penetration is viewed as an interlinked process of adoption wherein a technology is selected for use by a chosen few; and diffusion wherein the usage behaviour spreads among the members of the target community. A model of IT penetration is developed and then simulated under various constructed scenarios. Study results are expected to assist managers to better analyse different usage scenarios and speed up the penetration of a new system within the organisation. This in turn would contribute to overall organisational imperatives. Copyright 2012 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.
